Guide
Turnhole Bend Overlook is a wooden platform about halfway around a hilly 0.5-mile loop on Mammoth Cave’s south side. Start at the Brownsville Road trail entrance. The walk also passes a sinkhole deck, then descends toward the overlook before climbing back, so the distance is short but the route has some up and down. Think of it as a compact geology walk, not a guaranteed open river vista. The platform looks toward the park’s north side across the Green River; whether Turnhole Bend Spring is visible depends on season and leaf cover.
The loop reaches a deck above a sinkhole, with a spur leading into it, before continuing to the spring overlook. At the platform, benches and an interpretive panel give you a reason to stop a little longer than a quick photo. Take in the wooded ridges too: the view can feel more like forest canopy than an open-water overlook.
Turnhole Bend recalls the riverboat era. Boats used the spring area as a safe place to turn around when river travel was common; the traffic ended, but the name stayed. The overlook’s panel helps place the spring in that older river route.
