Fire Temple and New Fire House Overlook

This roadside overlook on Mesa Top Loop faces Fire Temple and New Fire House across the canyon. It is a useful pause on the six-mile self-guided drive: two Ancestral Pueblo cliff sites are visible without a long walk. You can see them from your vehicle. The closer sandstone viewpoint is reached by three tall, uneven stone steps from the parking area, so use it only if that footing works for you. Designated restrooms are midway along the loop; winter snow can temporarily close the road.

The broad plaza at the front of Fire Temple is centered on a raised, round firepit, with rectangular floor vaults on either side. When covered, the vaults may have served as foot drums. The layout resembles central plazas in Pueblo communities today, where social and ritual activities take place. Plazas like this became more common around this period, suggesting larger, more inclusive gatherings.

Painted figures of rain clouds, corn, cactus, people and animals decorate the site. Look for bands of white and red plaster on the right and back walls. From the closer sandstone viewpoint, the pair of cliff sites makes a compact lesson in how Ancestral Pueblo people shaped spaces for community life.
