Long House

Long House is a large Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwelling tucked beneath a broad sandstone alcove on Wetherill Mesa. At 298 feet long, with more than 150 rooms, it is Mesa Verde's second-largest cliff dwelling. A reserved ranger-led tour takes you inside among the rooms, plaza, kivas, and seep spring. This is the dwelling itself; the separate Long House Overlook faces it from across the canyon. Reserve ahead and plan for a strenuous visit rather than a quick stop.

From Wetherill Pavilion, it is a 0.75-mile walk each way to the tour trailhead. The full visit covers about 2.25 miles round trip and takes roughly 115 to 135 minutes, including the 90-minute guided tour. The route drops about 130 feet and climbs back, with a steep staircase and two 15-foot ladders at the dwelling. At roughly 7,000 feet, that climb can feel harder than the distance suggests; consider whether the stairs and ladders work for everyone in your group before reserving.

The tour brings you close to the masonry and the way the dwellings fit beneath the rock ceiling. Look for the kivas, storage spaces, and the active seep spring as well as the larger rooms. The plaza gives the site its scale: it is unusually large beside the clustered walls and protected by the overhang. For a photo, the wide view across the plaza shows both the rooms and the alcove above them; include a ladder or low wall when it is in view to give the architecture scale.

Long House may have been home to 150 to 175 people. Benches, vaults, and a raised firebox in the plaza are clues that it may have served as a dance plaza or great kiva, though its exact use is not settled. The arrangement suggests a place for community life as well as shelter, and the ranger's interpretation helps make those possibilities easier to see in the architecture.

Long House was excavated and stabilized between 1959 and 1961 as part of the Wetherill Mesa Archeological Project. The standing walls are still affected by rain, animals, insects, and pieces of the alcove breaking away, so stay with the tour route and follow the ranger's directions around the masonry.

Wetherill Mesa is a seasonal part of the park, so check the current tour schedule before building a day around it. From the park entrance, it is about 15 miles to Wetherill Road, then a winding 12 miles to the pavilion; allow 30 to 45 minutes for that last stretch. Vehicles longer than 25 feet or heavier than 8,000 pounds are not permitted on Wetherill Road. Public restrooms, parking, and a seasonal snack bar with prepackaged food and drinks are at the pavilion, before the walk. Dogs are not allowed on the Long House trail or inside the dwelling.

The trail is exposed in places, water is limited, and Wetherill is hot and dry at high elevation. Summer thunderstorms can develop quickly, and shade along the route is limited. Carry water and sun protection, and leave time for the uphill return to the pavilion.
