Long House

Overview

Long House is one of the park’s marquee cliff dwellings and a clear favorite for many visitors. It’s ranger-guided only, more intimate than the big-name sites on Chapin Mesa, and you’re allowed to get close—walking among and even behind portions of the structures. Expect thoughtful interpretation that brings Ancestral Puebloan life into focus.

Getting There & Reservations

Long House sits on Wetherill Mesa, a quieter spur off the main park road. Plan roughly 50–60 minutes from the park entrance to the Wetherill Mesa parking/orientation area, then factor in the on-foot approach (details below). Tours are ticketed and often sell out; tickets typically release about 14 days ahead on Recreation.gov, so set a reminder if you have specific dates in mind. Wetherill Mesa/Long House usually operates seasonally from late spring through early fall, with dates varying by year. Vehicle limits apply on the Wetherill Mesa road (generally under 25 feet and 8,000 lbs), and schedules can change with staffing, weather, or fire conditions—always recheck the day you visit.

The Walk & Tour

From the Wetherill Mesa parking area, it’s about 0.75 miles on a paved path to the Long House trailhead—downhill going out, uphill coming back, and with little shade. From the trailhead, the route becomes uneven with switchbacks and steps. The outing is easy to moderate overall, but the altitude can make the return feel stout. The total distance is roughly 2.25 miles round trip with about 130 feet of elevation gain. Expect two 15‑foot ladders within the site; in some seasons an alternate stair route may be available—ask your ranger. The guided experience itself runs about two hours, and the whole endeavor commonly takes 2–2.5 hours including the approaches.

What Makes It Special

Long House occupies a grand alcove carved in the Cliff House Sandstone. You can see an active seep spring along the sandstone–shale contact that once provided reliable water. Look for dark streaks of desert varnish on the cliff and fresh sandstone spalling that hints at how these alcoves keep expanding. The combination of geology and cultural history is on full display here, and the ranger narration ties it together in a way that’s hard to beat.

Amenities & Rules

You’ll find restrooms, a covered picnic area, and seasonal snack/food service at the Wetherill Mesa parking/orientation area. There are often portable toilets near the Long House trailhead, but there are no facilities at the dwelling itself. Only water is allowed at the site—eat before you descend. Dogs are allowed on the Long House Loop Trail but not inside the cliff dwelling.

Planning Pairings

If you’re also touring Cliff Palace or other Chapin Mesa sites the same day, give yourself at least four hours between a Long House tour and anything on Chapin Mesa to account for the driving, walking, and tour times. If you only have time for one paid tour, Long House is the most immersive choice thanks to its up-close access and fewer crowds.

Best Time to Visit

Book an early tour to beat heat on the exposed approach and to avoid the end-of-day rush. Summer is peak season for tours; shoulder dates sometimes extend into early fall depending on conditions. Regardless of start time, carry water, wear grippy footwear, and budget extra minutes for the walk from parking to the trailhead so you’re at the meeting point 15–20 minutes before your scheduled departure.

Altitude Notes

Mesa Verde sits around 7,000 feet. Even modest hills can feel tougher than expected—pace yourself and hydrate.
