The overlook is on the seasonal Cliff Palace Loop Road, generally open from late spring through December 1, but significant snowfall can close it earlier. For a photo, go wide enough to keep the canyon walls and tree-covered rim together; the named structures are small against that larger view. Auto parking and interpretive exhibits are available at the stop.

Cliff Canyon Overlook is a scenic stop on Cliff Palace Loop Road, looking across a wooded canyon toward Mesa Verde's cliff dwellings. I'd pause if you like tracing the buildings into the rock: this is a wide panorama, and the ruins read as small details rather than a close-up visit.

Scan the canyon walls for House of Many Windows, Site 634, Sun Point Cliff Dwelling and Mummy House. Sun Temple sits on the mesa top across the canyon. These take careful looking; binoculars can help you pick out the separate structures.

A lived-in canyonCliff Canyon was a thriving Ancestral Pueblo neighborhood in the 1200s.

Cliff Canyon was a thriving Ancestral Pueblo neighborhood in the 1200s. Across Mesa Verde, many cliff dwellings were built near seep springs, among the area's few permanent water sources. Wood samples also show evidence of extended droughts, which helps explain why a reliable spring mattered so much in this dry landscape.
