House of Many Windows Overlook

House of Many Windows Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Cliff Palace Loop Road, looking across Cliff Canyon at a small cliff dwelling. Parking is right beside the view, so this is a brief stop rather than a walk to the rooms. The dwelling sits far enough away that binoculars or camera zoom help you pick out its openings. Cliff Palace Loop is seasonal, typically open from late spring until December 1 or the first significant snowfall; check current road status before planning around it.

The dwelling itself occupies a ledge only ten feet wide. Its 15 rooms are made from hand-shaped sandstone, and the openings that look like windows are actually doorways. There is evidence of a kiva. The NPS says it may have been home to an Ancestral Pueblo family in the 1200s.

Look beyond the named dwelling: Site 634, Mummy House, Oak Tree House and Sun Temple are also visible from this overlook. A wide photo keeps the alcove in its canyon setting; then zoom in for the small row of stone openings. The appeal is seeing these sites together in the landscape, rather than getting close enough to inspect one dwelling.
