Navajo Canyon View

Navajo Canyon View is a flat, paved overlook beside its parking area on the six-mile Mesa Top Loop. It opens onto a broad, tree-covered canyon cut between layered sandstone walls, and you can take in the view from your vehicle. This is an easy pause rather than a hike. The loop begins about 20 miles beyond the park entrance; allow 45 minutes to an hour if you plan to stop at several sites.

The canyon is the sure thing here. A cliff dwelling may be difficult to pick out from the rim, so come for the deep, wooded cut and its long bands of pale rock rather than a guaranteed close look at a building. For a photo, include a strip of the rocky rim or a juniper in the foreground; it gives the opposite wall and canyon floor more scale.

At roughly 7,000 feet, this plateau’s south-facing slope gets more warmth and sunlight, extending the growing season. Prevailing southwesterly winds lay down rich sediment. Mesa Verde averages about 18 inches of precipitation a year, from winter snow and late-summer storms; that pattern allowed Ancestral Pueblo people to farm without irrigation. The Mesa Top Loop traces roughly 700 years of Ancestral Pueblo architecture, and this stop focuses on the landscape that sustained life here.

Porous sandstone caprock absorbs seasonal moisture. Water moves through the rock and emerges as seep springs below the canyon rim, supporting plants, animals and people. Over time, water dissolves the stone and forms alcoves in the canyon walls, the sheltered recesses that make Mesa Verde’s cliff settings so distinctive.
