Overview
Roaring Billy Falls is a tiered, roughly 30 m cascade that drops through dense rainforest into the glacially fed Haast River. It’s a classic Haast Pass pull-off: short, pretty, and a perfect leg‑stretch between Wānaka and the West Coast.
What You’ll See
The track threads a lush podocarp and silver beech forest with a fern‑rich understorey. Expect miro and mataī among the canopy, with southern rātā and kāmahi adding to that almost “Jurassic” feel. The trail ends at the riverbank, where the turquoise/blue‑green Haast River sprawls over a wide bed of smooth pebbles and the falls tumble on the opposite bank.
The Walk
It’s an easy gravel-and-boardwalk stroll—about 20 minutes return, and many visitors do it faster. You view the waterfall from across the river; the braided Haast is hazardous and not for crossing. If you step onto the riverbed, expect loose, sometimes slick stones and give the water plenty of respect.
Geology & Setting
Mount Aspiring National Park was carved by ancient glaciers, leaving steep valley walls and deep gorges. The Haast’s vivid color comes from glacial sediments, and the falls themselves spill down a forested slope before meeting the river’s broad shingle flats.
Practicalities
There’s a signed car park directly off State Highway 6. Facilities are minimal—plan bathroom and food stops elsewhere. Sandflies love the river edge; repellent makes this stop far more pleasant. Weather here changes on a dime, and the western side of the park is notably wet, so pack layers and be ready for rain.
Best Time to Visit
Open year‑round. Spring and summer bring warmer walking and typically fuller flows. The falls are best after rain. For safety and comfort, stick to the official viewpoint if conditions are poor, and check DOC alerts and SH6 road conditions before committing to the drive.
