Fantail Falls

Overview

Fantail Falls is the classic Haast Pass pull-off: a quick stroll delivers a wide, fan-shaped waterfall pouring into the Haast River. It’s a scenic breather on the long SH6 drive between Wānaka and the West Coast glaciers, and most people spend about 15 minutes here.

What You’ll See

A short, well-formed bush path drops you onto the riverbed opposite the falls. From here you get the postcard view—water veiling over schist into clear, blue-green pools. The broad stone beach lets you shuffle around for different angles, and you’ll often spot temporary stone stacks built by visitors.

Getting There

The signed car park sits on State Highway 6 (Haast Highway), about 85 km north of Wānaka. It’s roughly a 200 m return walk (about 5 minutes) from the lot to the viewing area on the riverbed. The Brewster Track also starts from this car park if you’re planning something bigger.

On‑Site Logistics

• No facilities: there are no toilets or treated water here. The nearest toilets are at Pleasant Flat Campsite, about 10 km north on SH6.
• Viewing is from the opposite side of the Haast River—do not attempt to cross.
• Drones require a permit from the Department of Conservation (DOC) on conservation land.

Safety & Conditions

The Haast River can run high and fast after rain. Stick to the margins of the riverbed and avoid swift water. Sandflies love this spot—come prepped with repellent and long sleeves, or keep moving.

Best Time to Visit

There are no formal hours, but it’s a roadside stop that draws tour traffic. Aim for early morning or late afternoon to dodge the midday surge and harsh overhead light; weekends and midday see the most crowding. Soft light hits the falls nicely in the first and last hours of the day.
