Thunder Creek Falls

Overview

Thunder Creek Falls is the classic quick-stop waterfall: a single 28 m chute dropping into the Haast River, framed by kāmahi and silver beech. The Department of Conservation maintains a short, sealed path that makes this an effortless detour on the Haast Highway (SH6).

What You’ll See

From the end platform you’re face-on to the falls across the broad, glacial-blue Haast River. The setting is lush and consistently photogenic, with the waterfall’s straight plunge and forested walls giving it that postcard look without any hiking commitment.

Getting There

There’s a small car park directly off SH6, about 50 km south of Haast township. The sealed track is brief and straightforward, suitable for a leg-stretch on the Wanaka–West Coast drive.

Facilities and Practicalities

There are no toilets at the falls. Use Pleasant Flat Campsite facilities 5 km north on SH6, or the Awarua/Haast Visitor Centre during opening hours. Cell coverage is available at Pleasant Flat, which is handy for checking Haast Pass road conditions before continuing.

Wildlife and Nature

The surrounding valley supports beech–podocarp forest with subalpine scrub higher up. Keep an eye out for kea overhead and, with luck, blue duck/whio along river reaches; red deer occur in the area and brown trout are common in the river.

Rules and Safety

Stay on the defined track and behind barriers—the Haast River is powerful, and the viewing area is where you should remain. All drone use on public conservation land here requires a permit from DOC.

Best Time to Visit

It’s accessible at all hours, but roadside stops like this are most popular around midday, especially on weekends. For calmer vibes and easier parking, swing by early or late in the day. Soft light then also flatters photos. After rain, expect slick surfaces—step carefully.
