Rob Roy Glacier

Rob Roy Glacier is a hanging glacier beneath Rob Roy Peak, at the head of a steep alpine valley in Mount Aspiring National Park. The usual visit is a 10 km return walk from Raspberry Creek car park, about 3–4 hours. Go for the glacier, waterfalls and big mountain scenery; if you want a quick roadside view, this isn't it. The route climbs steadily, and its uneven descent can feel harder than the easy-to-intermediate grade suggests.

From May through November, DOC strongly recommends ending at the lower lookout because avalanche paths cross the upper section, even when the track itself looks snow-free. The lower lookout still has glacier views. Outside that season, the upper lookout is the marked track's end and the main view across the valley. Don't continue beyond it: steep drops, canyons, unstable ground and fast water make the terrain dangerous.

About 15 minutes from the car park, the track crosses a swing bridge over the West Matukituki River. It climbs through a small gorge and beech forest, then opens into alpine vegetation near the valley head. Glacier, snowfield, cliff and waterfall views gather toward the lookouts, so the forested approach is part of the walk rather than the main payoff. The bridges have capacity limits; be ready to wait at either end.

From the lookout, you see the hanging glacier across the valley below Rob Roy Peak, with waterfalls dropping from the surrounding cliffs. Keep the ice and the dark cliff in the same frame: the rock face gives the glacier a sense of scale. The safest viewing point is the track's lookout; DOC advises against exploring past the upper one.

The lower track passes through beech forest with ferns and mosses. Near the alpine section, listen and look for kea; DOC says they are often seen or heard in the valley. Don't feed them.

Raspberry Creek car park is about 54 km west of Wānaka, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by road. The final 30 km are gravel, with several fords in the last 10 km; heavy rain can make them impassable. DOC says they are usually passable for 2WDs and campervans after 24 hours with little or no rain, but check their depth and current road advice before leaving. If you need to stop before the last pair, keep clear of farm gates. The access crosses private land, so stay on the marked track and leave gates as you find them.
