Routeburn Flats

Overview

Routeburn Flats is the broad, grassy floor of the Route Burn valley—an easy, scenic reward about 1.5–2.5 hours on foot from the Routeburn Shelter. Think braided river, mountain walls, and a feeling of space that invites you to linger.

Getting There

From the Routeburn Shelter (eastern road end), it’s roughly 7–7.5 km with about 300 m of ascent to reach the Flats. The track is well formed, but expect crowds in peak season and come prepared for quickly changing weather year‑round.

What You’ll See

The Flats open out to 180‑degree valley views with the river threading across the meadows—a classic first‑day highlight of the Routeburn Track. Many day hikers turn around here; if you’re continuing, it’s a further, steady climb of about 2.3 km (roughly 1–1.5 hours) to Routeburn Falls Hut and onward toward Harris Saddle.

Hut and Campsite Basics

Right at the Flats you’ll find a DOC hut (20 bunks) and a walk‑in Great Walk campsite. In the Great Walks season (November 1–April 30), the hut offers flushing toilets, cold running water, heating with fuel provided, solar lighting, and gas cookers (bring your own cookware). A DOC ranger is stationed here in season. Outside the season (May 1–October 31), facilities scale back to pit toilets, no indoor running water, and no gas; beds are first‑come, first‑served, and no ranger is present. Campers must carry their own tent, sleeping bag, and stove, and may not use hut facilities.

Water at the Flats is untreated—boil, filter, or treat before drinking. The campsite has long‑drop toilets and a simple kitchen shelter with benches, sink, and picnic tables. Choose tent sites away from trees for safety. There’s no cell reception.

Fees and Bookings (examples)

Bookings are required for both hut and campsite during the Great Walks season. Example campsite prices for November 1, 2025–April 30, 2026: Adults NZ $28 (NZ) / $42 (international); Children NZ $14 (NZ) / $21 (international); infants 0–4 free. Outside the peak season, campsite fees drop to NZ $10 adult / $5 child. Hut prices vary by season and visitor type; in‑season adult international hut beds are listed at a higher rate than domestic.

Best Time to Visit

For the smoothest experience and full services, visit during the Great Walks season (November–April). For quieter flats and lower campsite fees, shoulder/off‑season can be lovely, but expect reduced facilities and wintery conditions. Whatever the month, pack rain layers and be ready for changeable weather.

On the Ground Tips

Sandflies are part of the deal here—bring repellent and cover up, especially around camp. If you prefer a hut and start early, aiming for Routeburn Falls Hut on day one saves you some climb on day two; otherwise, the Flats make an excellent first night or day‑hike turnaround.
