Routeburn Falls Hut

Routeburn Falls Hut is a 48-bunk Great Walk hut at the bushline, close to Routeburn Falls. It’s the usual first night on the standard 33 km, three-day, two-night Routeburn Track, which crosses Mount Aspiring and Fiordland national parks. This is an overnight walk, not a roadside stop: allow 9.8 km and about 2.5–4 hours from Routeburn Shelter. The last 2.3 km from Routeburn Flats takes about 1–1.5 hours.

From Routeburn Flats, the track climbs through beech forest until the hut reaches the edge of the bushline. The falls are nearby, and the valley opens toward the Humboldt Mountains. The hut is a good first night if you’re walking the full track; it’s too far in for a quick look from the road.

The sleeping area is shared, with mattresses for 48. In the Great Walk season there’s a communal kitchen and dining room, cooking facilities and fuel, heating, solar lighting, water, washbasins, flushing toilets and a resident ranger. Bring your own food, sleeping bag and cooking utensils. There are no showers, and the dormitory setup means little privacy; light sleepers may want earplugs.

During the Great Walk season, book ahead. Outside it, bunks are first come, first served, the ranger and cooking gas aren’t provided, indoor water is off, and the toilets are pit toilets. Winter travel on the track needs alpine, river-crossing and navigation skills. Dogs aren’t allowed on the Routeburn Track.

The next hut, Lake Mackenzie, is 11.3 km and about 4.5–6 hours away. The route climbs past wetlands and tussock to Lake Harris and Harris Saddle, then crosses the exposed Hollyford Face, with views toward the Darran Mountains. Look for the alpine plants noted around the saddle; this is a full mountain day beyond the first night.
