Overview

A classic 20‑bunk Great Walk hut set on the grassy flats of the Route Burn, Routeburn Flats Hut pairs comfort with big valley views. It’s a popular day‑walk target and an easy first‑night stop on the Routeburn Track. The current hut dates to 1973, replacing an earlier 1908 structure.

Where it is and how to get there

From Routeburn Shelter (Routeburn Road) it’s 7.5 km (about 1.5–2.5 hours) on a well‑graded track to the hut. If you’re continuing, it’s a further 2.3 km (about 1–1.5 hours) to Routeburn Falls Hut. A serviced campsite sits right beside the hut on the flats.

20 bunks with mattresses in communal rooms
Flushing toilets; cold running water; heated common area

Booking, passes, and fees

Bookings are required during Great Walks season and Backcountry Hut Passes are not valid then. On November 22, 2025, it is within the Great Walks season, so you must book. Per‑person fees:

Nov 1, 2025 – Apr 30, 2026: Adults NZ $88 (NZ residents) / $132 (international); Children (5–17) NZ $44 / $66; Infants (0–4) free. NZ rates require proof of eligibility.
Jul 1 – Oct 31, 2025: Adults $30; Children $15; Infants free.
May 1 – Jun 30 (shoulder period): Adults $35; Children $17.50; Infants free.

What it’s like

Expect a cozy, social hut with a crackling fire on cold nights and big‑sky views over the braided river flats. There’s outdoor seating and motion lights, but no mobile reception. On wet days the approach can brim with roadside waterfalls, and the flats can be lively with sandflies—repellent helps.

Best time to visit

Pick your season based on the experience you want. November–April gives you full facilities, a resident ranger, and flushing toilets. May–October is quieter and cheaper but more basic, with no gas and pit toilets. Either way, the flats deliver wide views year‑round.
