Why pull overThis is a quiet water-and-woods stop at milepost 263.

This is a quiet water-and-woods stop at milepost 263.9 near Tupelo, built around a pond and the Town Creek bottoms. It works well if you want to stretch your legs by the water, drop a line, or step onto the trail without a long detour.

The pond sits with a wooded shoreline on one side and open grassy ground on the other, with a low bridge crossing the water. Beyond it lie the Town Creek bottoms, the low floodplain ground that shapes this whole spot. From the north side you look out over natural and cultivated land protected along the parkway, where leased farm ground is planted with traditional crops to keep the rural landscape intact.

Fishing and wildlifeFishing in the pond is allowed, and there is a fish-cleaning station on site.

Fishing in the pond is allowed, and there is a fish-cleaning station on site. Turtles sometimes pile up along the water to sun themselves, so it is worth scanning the banks and any logs before you move on.

Walking and trail distancesYou can take a short jaunt into the woods or head down toward Town Creek.

You can take a short jaunt into the woods or head down toward Town Creek. The Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail runs from this stop in both directions: a little more than 2 miles south to the Chickasaw Village Site, and a little less than 2 miles north to the Beech Springs Trailhead. The Chickasaw Village Site is its own separate stop rather than part of this pond and creek area.

The name Old Town came from English settlers, who applied it to a large established Chickasaw village nearby; the stream then took the same name. On July 15, 1864, the Battle of Tupelo brought intense fighting to the bottoms along the creek, so the calm ground you are standing on carries more weight than it first appears.

Plan for daylight, and aim for the softer light early or late in the day when the pond picks up reflections and the wooded shoreline stops going flat. The low bridge, the grassy field, and the picnic table all give you easy foreground anchors for a wider shot across the water.

Honest expectationsThis is a modest roadside stop, not a headline attraction.

This is a modest roadside stop, not a headline attraction. Come for the water, the shade, a picnic, or a short walk, and take it as a calm break between bigger destinations.
