Overview

About Rock Spring

Why stop

  • Memorable stepping-stone crossing over a spring-fed creek
  • Fall hummingbirds and spring wildflowers add seasonal interest

Heads up

  • Uneven rock crossing has large gaps and can be wet or slick
  • Short loop is a modest stop rather than a long hike
A small natural spring bubbles up from the ground here, and a 2,200-foot loop (about 0.6 miles) circles it in roughly 20 minutes. It is a low-effort leg-stretch with real substance: the trail follows Colbert Creek through bottomland soil and limestone, and interpretive stops explain how the land shifts from an abandoned field, to streamside woods, to a rocky hillside.

Best time to go

Fall is the standout season, when hundreds of visitors come to watch ruby-throated hummingbirds feeding on jewelweed and other late wildflowers. Spring brings good wildflower viewing, and birding is worthwhile through the year. Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light and a quieter walk. After rain, water levels and footing can both change quickly.

“Rock Spring is coming up, with a roughly twenty-minute loop beside Colbert Creek and a spring bubbling from the ground. In fall, look for ruby-throated hummingbirds feeding on jewelweed along the wetland.”

Watch for small fish holding in the deeper pools and for signs of beaver activity along the wetland. Dams here have been built, abandoned, and washed out repeatedly over the decades, so expect a changing wetland rather than one fixed structure. The path crosses the creek on stepping stones, and when the water is low and clear, some visitors dangle their feet in the swift, cool current. Treat that as optional and condition-dependent, not a sure thing.

Conditions and honest drawbacksThe surface is compacted soil, relatively flat with a slight rise in a few spots.

The surface is compacted soil, relatively flat with a slight rise in a few spots. The creek is crossed on rock steps with large gaps, which makes the loop not suitable for mobility devices or for anyone with balance concerns. The crossing can be uneven, wet, or slick, so check your footing before committing to it. Parking is a small pull-in with one accessible space and about eight unmarked spaces, and facilities beyond parking should not be counted on.
