Overview

A classic valley-and-forest ramble to a rewarding destination. The Speargrass Track is an intermediate, well‑graded out‑and‑back to Speargrass Hut through beautiful beech forest beside Te Horowai/Speargrass Creek. Expect about 8.6 miles total (7 km each way) and plan 5–6 hours round‑trip, depending on pace and conditions. It’s a genuine “family challenge” rather than a stroll—roots, mud, and a few small creek crossings keep it interesting—but the track is signposted and generally easy to follow.

What you’ll see and feel

From the Mount Robert car park the track descends gradually, follows the valley floor near the river, then climbs through mature beech to a tussock clearing. The hut sits in sunshine with mountain views—an easy place to linger for lunch before turning around. Underfoot you’ll encounter typical South Island beech‑forest footing: roots, occasional mud, and sections that get slick after rain.

Conditions and hazards

This is an alpine park where freezing conditions can occur any time of year; in winter (May–October) expect very cold temps and possible snow on the track. Summer brings sandflies—cover up and use repellent—and wasps are a known hazard from roughly December to April. Treat or boil water (giardia can’t be ruled out). Mobile reception is limited; a personal locator beacon is a smart carry. Isolated car parks in the area are prone to theft, so don’t leave valuables; the visitor centre offers bag storage. There are no rubbish facilities—pack everything out.

Logistics

Trailhead parking is at the end of Mount Robert Road (off SH 63, west of St Arnaud). There are toilets at the car park. Note: when the road is icy, a gate at the bottom of Mount Robert Road may be locked. The track is out‑and‑back to Speargrass Hut; most hikers return the same way. Staying at the hut? Fees apply and bunks are first‑come, first‑served.

Best time to hike

Year‑round, with caveats. Late spring through autumn usually offers friendlier travel, but always pack warm, waterproof layers—cold snaps happen any month. In winter, expect snow/ice and shorter daylight; start early and turn back if conditions deteriorate. Summer afternoons can be buggy; mornings often feel calmer and cooler.

For experienced extensions

Beyond Speargrass Hut the route to Angelus Hut becomes a different, more serious trip: higher, more exposed, and subject to rapid weather changes, snow, ice, and avalanche terrain in season. Parties tackling that should carry the right winter kit and skills; in heavy snow those routes can take up to nine hours. If continuing via Robert Ridge, remember there’s no drinking water on the ridge—carry plenty. Angelus Hut requires advance booking.

Pros

  • Scenic hut in a sunny clearing with broad mountain views
  • Well‑graded, clearly marked track that still feels like a real backcountry walk

Cons

  • Sandflies and seasonal wasps can be relentless around the creek and hut
  • Gate on Mount Robert Road can lock during icy conditions, blocking access
  • Trailhead car park is isolated—vehicle break‑ins do happen

Parking

End of Mount Robert Road (off SH 63) at the Mount Robert car park; toilets on site. Note the bottom gate can be locked when the road is icy.

Caution

Alpine weather year‑round (winter snow/ice possible), sandflies, wasps common Dec–Apr, treat water for giardia risk, limited mobile reception—carry a PLB, and don’t leave valuables at the isolated car park.
