Angelus Hut

Angelus Hut is a serviced 28-bunk hut at 1,650 m on the shore of Lake Angelus / Rotomaninitua. The lake and nearby Hinapouri Tarn sit in a glacial basin ringed by rocky peaks. This is a backcountry destination, not a road stop: allow two to three days for the tramp, depending on your route.

Four approaches reach the hut. The popular Pinchgut–Robert Ridge route starts with a steep climb from Mt Robert car park, then follows a long, exposed ridge above the trees. It is the route for a settled forecast and confident mountain walkers; there is no easy escape if weather turns. Speargrass Creek has unbridged stream crossings and can be muddy. The Travers–Cascade route follows Hukere Stream, while steep, exposed Mt Cedric is usually part of the Travers–Sabine Circuit. Routes are rough and conditions can change fast, so choose for your experience as much as for the scenery.

From Robert Ridge, clear weather opens views over Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa before the route drops toward Lake Angelus and the hut. The basin is the payoff: water, tussock and rock under a ring of high peaks. For a photo, frame the hut against the lakes from above on the ridge, or put the building and shoreline together from the basin.

Lake Angelus is an alpine tarn in a glacial basin above the larger lakes below. Hinapouri Tarn lies close by, and rocky tops around the hut make this a place to linger rather than simply sleep and leave. In suitable summer conditions, Mt Angelus / Maniniaro (2,075 m) is a possible side trip from Sunset Saddle.

Book ahead year-round; there are no walk-in bunks, and sleeping places are chosen on arrival. The hut has mattresses and shared meal-preparation space, but bring your own food and cooker. Its tap water is untreated, so boil it, and pack out all rubbish. Expect a communal room and the possibility of a noisy night. The separate campsite sits just outside the hut and has five tent sites; campers may use the hut toilets and water.

In most years, Lake Angelus freezes and the approaches are snow-covered from May to October. A winter visit is a serious alpine trip requiring the right skills and avalanche preparation; snow, ice, high winds and poor visibility can occur at other times too. Dogs are not allowed on the hut routes.
