Overview

About Calshot Castle

Why stop

  • Distinctive cylindrical Tudor keep with moat and roof gun
  • Wide Solent views toward the Isle of Wight

Heads up

  • Compact site makes for a short visit
  • Many stairs and an exposed moat edge require care
This is a Tudor artillery fort on Calshot Spit, built in 1539 and finished in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's chain of coastal defences protecting the sea passage to Southampton. Stone and lead from the recently closed monasteries at Beaulieu and Netley went into its walls, and the shape is unusual: a compact cylindrical keep ringed by a courtyard, curtain wall and moat, sitting right out on the shingle where the Solent narrows. If you like defensive architecture you can actually read at a glance, it is worth the detour.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Aim for a clear day if the rooftop panorama is your main reason for coming, since the Isle of Wight outlook is the payoff. The spit is exposed, so a windproof layer is sensible even in summer. The main tradeoff is scale: this is a small fort with a big story, and visitors expecting extensive rooms or grounds may find it brief. Treat the stairs and the views as the experience and it delivers well. The nearby activities centre hangars and its café are a separate operation next door, not facilities inside the castle, so do not count on refreshments as part of your visit.

The centrepiece is the three-storey gun tower, roughly 16 metres across, with displays inside covering the site's long afterlife as an anti-smuggling base, a First World War seaplane station that hosted the Schneider Trophy air races, and a re-armed defence position in the Second World War. The Sunderland Flying Boat connection is the part most people remember. Climb to the top and you get wide views across the Solent toward the Isle of Wight, with a gun mounted on the keep roof and shipping traffic passing close by. Plan on a short visit rather than a half day; the site is small and the interest is concentrated.

Practical preparationOpening is on selected dates, not daily year round.
  • Opening is on selected dates, not daily year round. Check the current opening information before making a special trip, because the pattern changes through the year.
  • Parking is paid, and charges apply to all castle visitors.
  • There are many stairs inside the keep and up to the roof, so climbing may be difficult for some visitors, and pushchair access is limited.
  • The castle is surrounded by a deep moat with a steep drop and a real drowning risk. Keep children closely supervised, especially near the outer edges.
