Lepe Country Park

Overview

About Lepe Country Park

Why stop

  • Solent shore, pine-fringed coast and Isle of Wight views

Heads up

  • Paid parking and busier summer weekends
Most New Forest highlights are inland heath and woodland. This is the county park where the Forest edge meets the sea, with over a mile of beach, pine-fringed cliffs, wildflower meadows and woods on the Solent shore at Exbury, roughly nine miles south of Southampton. The draw is the combination: an open coastal walk, easy picnic and play space, wildlife watching you can actually reach, and D-Day remains still sitting on the foreshore.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Sunny weekends and school holidays are the busiest, so arrive early in the day for calmer parking and a quieter shore. Spring brings the meadows and returning migrants; autumn and winter suit big-sky coastal walks and wintering birds, with the cafe as a warm-up stop. Low tide opens up more foreshore and exposes the mudflats where waders such as oystercatchers and curlews feed; high tide shortens the walkable beach. Late afternoon light across the water is kind to the pine-topped cliffs.

Access and facilities

Verified provision includes ramps from the car park down to the beach, accessible parking spaces in the beach car park, accessible toilets by the information office, a changing-places toilet next to the beach car park, an accessible pond-dipping path with platforms, and a boardwalk to the bird hide. Staff at The Lookout can help with hide access and information. Not every path or facility is level, so plan around these specific routes rather than assuming full site-wide access.

More about Lepe Country Park

What you see and doShoreline walking: stroll, run or walk the length of the shore with views across the water…
  • Shoreline walking: stroll, run or walk the length of the shore with views across the water toward the Isle of Wight. It is a shingle and mudflat coast rather than soft sand, so wear shoes you do not mind getting wet or muddy.
  • History on the beach: walk toward Stanswood Bay for wartime structures linked to the 6 June 1944 departures for Normandy, plus the memorial site for the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards. Lepe also has a documented smuggling past and a Cold War Royal Observer Corps underground post at Stone Point, installed in 1962 to monitor the effects of a nuclear blast.
  • Wildlife: the North Solent Nature Reserve is an SSSI, and the Dark Water Estuary and shore draw returning migrants and wintering birds such as dark-bellied Brent geese. A bird hide is open year-round. Nothing is guaranteed, so bring binoculars and patience.
  • Family time: meadows and picnic spots, a children's play area, and two food options, with The Lookout cafe for panoramic Solent views and The Kiosk by the beach for hot food, ice cream and drinks.
The Lepe LoopThe signposted five-mile circular coast-and-countryside route starts here.

The signposted five-mile circular coast-and-countryside route starts here. It is mostly easy going, but expect gentle gradients, gates and three stiles, and know that woodland paths get very muddy after rain. The foreshore section can flood at high tide, so check the water before you set out and use the parallel road as the alternative if it is covered.

Safety and honest drawbacksSwimming is not advised.

Swimming is not advised. The beach is not lifeguarded and currents can be strong, so treat this as a walking and watching coast. Dogs are welcome along the beach year-round, with the family-friendly section in front of The Lookout kept dog-free from April to October and signs marking the arrangement. The main tradeoffs: parking is paid, warm summer periods feel crowded, the shore is stony rather than sandy, and the muddy or tide-affected sections mean this walk rewards decent footwear and a bit of planning.
