Hurricane Nature Trail

This is the easy, family-friendly loop right by the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center—distinct from the steeper Hurricane Hill hike. Expect a mellow stroll through subalpine meadows and pockets of fir and hemlock with big, photogenic views of the Olympic Mountains. On clear days you can spot the Strait of Juan de Fuca and even Vancouver Island. Benches and frequent interpretive stops make this as much a learning walk as a viewpoint sampler.

The loop is less than 1 mile total with minimal elevation change, and the surface is a mix of paved and gravel path. It’s a great leg-stretcher after the drive up Hurricane Ridge Road and an easy win for multi-generational groups. Wildflowers are the headliner in late spring and early summer—lupine, paintbrush, and avalanche lilies are common—so bring a camera and take your time.

Wildlife is often close at hand. Deer and marmots are regularly seen, and you’ll hear or see birds cruising the ridgeline. Interpretive signage dives into the subalpine ecosystem, local flora and fauna, the area’s glacially carved geology, and the fierce weather that gives Hurricane Ridge its name.

Best time to hike: Late June through September is prime, when the trail is typically snow-free and the meadows are in bloom. Early summer can still hold lingering snow patches. Winter conditions can make the area impassable due to deep snow and avalanche risk, and road access can close—always check current road and weather conditions before you go.

If you want something longer after this sampler loop, consider pairing your visit with other short paths near the visitor center or tackling the separate, longer and steeper Hurricane Hill Trail for a workout and bigger summit views.

Tips: Dress in layers and pack a windbreaker—gusty, fast-changing weather is part of the deal here even in summer. Start early or come on a weekday if you can; parking at the visitor center fills fast, often before 10 AM.
