This is a quick rainforest sampler that starts at the Mora Ranger Station in the Mora Campground area. From the parking area, the path crosses Mora Road and makes a small loop to James Pond, a marshy beaver pond. The loop is roughly 0.4 miles total and essentially flat, making it an easy leg-stretcher.
Expect classic Olympic coastal rainforest: tall conifers, moss-draped branches, and ferny understory. A short spur offers a better look at the pond, where yellow pond lilies bloom in summer. Keep an eye out for frogs and birds; elk sometimes drift through the area. It’s usually quiet compared to the park’s headline destinations, which is part of the appeal.
The surface is natural forest duff with some roots and the occasional uneven spot. After rain, sections can be muddy, so don’t wear your brand-new white sneakers. While flat, it’s not wheelchair- or stroller-friendly. Families tend to love it because it’s short, engaging, and right by the campground.
If you want a little more distance, the nearby Quillayute River Slough Trail also leaves from the ranger station area, but recent reports describe it as brushy with limited river views. Stick with the James Pond loop if you’re here for a simple, pleasant wander.
Best time to hike: Year-round. Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for drier footing and summer pond lilies. Go early or near dusk for better wildlife odds. In wet months, expect mud. No special permits are required for a day walk here; just check current conditions if there’s been heavy rain or wind.
Park at the Mora Ranger Station (adjacent to Mora Campground). The loop begins there, crosses Mora Road, and circles the pond.
Watch for roots and mud, especially after rain. The route crosses Mora Road—use care with traffic. Not wheelchair accessible.
