Mora Ranger Station

Overview

A small, no-frills outpost tucked beside Mora Campground, Mora Ranger Station is the on-the-ground hub for the Rialto Beach side of the coast. It’s where you grab tide charts, permits, and the latest safety intel before stepping onto one of the most rugged shorelines in the Lower 48.

Why stop here

When it’s staffed, rangers can steer you to the right beach access, update you on surf and log conditions, and help plan coastal routes. Even when it’s quiet, there’s self-registration for wilderness permits and basic info materials, so you can still get your paperwork sorted before heading to the sand and sea stacks.

What’s nearby

• Rialto Beach is about two miles down the road—prime driftwood, sea stacks, and storm drama when the Pacific is up.
• Short, easy nature strolls start right here: Slough Trail and the James Pond loop offer a quick, quiet taste of coastal rainforest without committing to a full beach hike.

Wildlife

Expect seabirds and eagles along the coast, plus amphibians and small mammals around the pond and slough. Offshore, keep an eye out for seals, sea lions, and the occasional whale from nearby beaches, especially in spring and fall migrations.

Facilities (set expectations)

This is a lean operation: information desk when open and self-issue permits year-round. There are no restrooms at the station—use the facilities at Mora Campground or Rialto Beach. No food, store, or Wi‑Fi.

Safety on the coast

This shoreline is beautiful and treacherous. Check tide charts, watch for sneaker waves, and know your headland timing if you’re walking the beach. Weather swings fast; rain and fog are common.

Best time to visit

• Summer weekdays for your best shot at finding it staffed and to dodge Rialto Beach congestion.
• Swing by early in the day to grab tide info before beach hiking.
• Shoulder seasons are quieter but wetter; plan for closures and self-service.
