Overview

About Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

Why stop

  • The Learning Center adds a short film and live-caterpillar displays.

Heads up

  • The walk-through is brief if you expect a large, open-air garden.
Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a paid, walk-through tropical habitat in a climate-controlled glass enclosure off Duval Street. Hundreds of free-flying butterflies move among flowering plants, trees, small waterfalls and birds. If close-up nature and a calm break sound good, make room for it; if you expect a sprawling botanical garden, know that the walk is compact. Visitors often spend about 45 minutes to an hour here, so it fits between other Key West stops.
Parkwolf’s verdictA worthwhile indoor stop

“You're coming up on the Southernmost Point area, a familiar Key West photo stop. The painted buoy is a landmark rather than an exact geographic claim: Ballast Key lies farther south.”

The visit begins with a 15-minute film and displays about butterfly anatomy, life cycles and monarch migration. A large map shows where different butterflies come from, and live caterpillars feed on their host plants nearby. Take a few minutes here before heading into the habitat; it gives the fluttering around you a little more context.

Walk slowly through the habitatInside, flowering tropical plants and cascading water make a lush setting for the butterflies.

Inside, flowering tropical plants and cascading water make a lush setting for the butterflies. The conservatory houses around 50 to 60 species from around the world, and butterflies often come close or settle on visitors. Move gently and give them time to come to you rather than following them around.

Look for Rhett and ScarlettTwo resident flamingos, Rhett and Scarlett, are an easy landmark among the birds and foliage.

Two resident flamingos, Rhett and Scarlett, are an easy landmark among the birds and foliage. They’re one of the details that makes this more than a room of butterflies: pause to watch them, then watch the other birds moving through the habitat too.

Know what the visit includesThis is a compact, mostly indoor visit, not a large garden that fills half a day.

This is a compact, mostly indoor visit, not a large garden that fills half a day. The conservatory is wheelchair accessible. Strollers and pets can go into the shop and gallery but not the butterfly enclosure; there’s stroller parking, and staff can watch well-behaved pets while you visit the habitat. Check the current last-entry time before coming late in the day.

The gift shop and Wings of Imagination gallery add a little more to browse, including butterfly art and mounted specimens. The visitor information lists no café or meal service, so plan food elsewhere. There’s a small first-come guest lot behind the building and a larger lot next door; parking fees and capacity aren’t specified.

Get the butterfly in its habitatFor a close-up photo, wait quietly near the flowers and keep some leaves or blooms in the frame.

For a close-up photo, wait quietly near the flowers and keep some leaves or blooms in the frame. That gives the butterfly a sense of scale and shows the lush enclosure around it better than a tight crop of wings alone.
