Overview
Gavanovac Lake is one of the four Lower Lakes, tucked in the canyon section between Milanovac and Kaluđerovac. It’s a scenic pause on the classic Lower Lakes circuits, with boardwalks that bring you right to the water’s edge and under small cascades.
What You’ll See
Expect striking blue‑to‑emerald tones that shift with the sun angle and mineral load. The water is famously clear; you’ll often spot fish cruising the shallows, and the boardwalks give you near‑water level views of tufa steps and nearby falls.
How This Place Formed (in plain English)
The whole Lower Lakes system sits on permeable limestone in a karst landscape. As spring water rich in dissolved calcium carbonate tumbles over mosses and aquatic plants, carbon dioxide escapes and calcium carbonate precipitates, building soft rock called tufa. Those living mats act like scaffolding, so barriers keep growing—sometimes up to millimeters per year—reshaping basins, drowning older steps, and creating today’s terraces and falls.
Getting There
Start at Entrance 1 (north). Gavanovac appears early on the Lower Lakes loop, included in the park’s Programs A and B. Figure roughly 15–30 minutes from the gate depending on crowds and photo stops. Stay on marked paths and the wooden walkways.
Facilities and Food
There aren’t facilities on the lake itself. You’ll find restrooms at Entrance 1 and at the nearby panoramic train stop ST1. Snacks and drinks are available at ST1 as well, with fuller options by the park entrances. Boats and the “panoramic train” are included with your ticket; timetables vary by season and are posted at the entrances. Swimming is strictly prohibited to protect the fragile tufa.
Best Time to Visit
Crowds concentrate on the Lower Lakes, especially from late morning into the afternoon. Aim for early morning for thinner crowds and softer light on the water; late day can also be lovely once the rush eases. Seasonal note: spring and fall are wetter; summer is mild; winter frequently brings snow and occasional ice, which can transform the look (and sometimes access) of the lakes.
Wildlife
Clear water makes fish easy to spot—European chub are common in these lakes. Keep to the boardwalks and avoid feeding wildlife to preserve the delicate ecosystem.
