Perched on the eastern rim above the Lower Lakes, the Gavanovac Lake Viewpoint gives you that classic canyon panorama: a small, intensely turquoise lake cradled by rugged limestone cliffs, with water forever stepping down from one basin to the next. It’s the wide, cinematic version of Plitvice—less mist-in-your-face, more big-picture beauty.
What You’ll See
From the upper path you can look straight over Gavanovac to the Milke Trnine Waterfalls where Milanovac spills in, then follow the flow toward the Velike Kaskade as water drops into Kaluđerovac. Expect a deep, narrow gorge, vertical rock walls, and that impossibly clear water that makes the fish look like they’re floating in air.
Getting There
Start at Entrance 1 and follow Program B (green waymarks) along the upper path on the eastern rim. Multiple signed lookouts serve up progressively wider angles before you descend to the lakeside boardwalks. The boardwalks give intimate cascade views, but the money shots are from the rim.
Best Time to Visit
Go early from Entrance 1 for softer light across the canyon and fewer people, or late afternoon for golden light on the cliffs. Midday is both the busiest and the flattest light—fine for a stroll, not ideal for photos.
Practical Notes
Tickets are timed and must be bought in advance; keep them handy for any electric‑boat or panoramic train segments included in your route. There are no restrooms at the viewpoint itself—use the ones at Entrance 1 or the P3 boat dock and the ST1–ST3 shuttle stops. Surfaces can be damp; grippy footwear beats flip‑flops every time.
