Overview
Gradinsko Lake (Gradinsko jezero) is one of the twelve Upper Lakes set on dolomite, linked by actively growing tufa barriers that shape its small cascades and clear water. It’s roughly L‑shaped, about 8 hectares in area, with depths a little over 8 m. Water drains toward the tiny Burgeti lakes and then into Kozjak, the system’s largest basin.
What You’ll See
Expect tranquil water framed by forest and the park’s signature tufa-built steps and rims. The boardwalk traces the shoreline, giving up-close looks at living tufa—formed where carbonate‑rich water meets mosses, algae, and bacteria—so the scenery subtly evolves over time.
Wildlife
The park monitors a healthy Eurasian otter population and has documented otters at Gradinsko. Around the water, watch for birds such as grey heron, and fish like chub and trout moving in the shallows. Large carnivores (bear, wolf, lynx) live in surrounding forests but aren’t typical sights along the lakeside paths.
Getting There
From Entrance 2, follow Upper Lakes routes E or H to pass Gradinsko; full‑day K routes also include this area. Many visitors pair a ride across Kozjak by electric boat with a walk through the Upper Lakes, and some routes use the “panoramic train” shuttle between hubs.
On‑Site Services
On the shoreline itself you’ll find nature and wayfinding signs, not cafés or shops. Restrooms, food, and other services are clustered at the main entrances and transport nodes (boat piers and shuttle stops). Plan bathroom and snack breaks around those hubs.
Rules That Matter Here
Stay on marked paths and boardwalks; no swimming, fishing, feeding wildlife, or cycling. Drones require a permit. Dogs are allowed only on leash (also on boats and shuttles).
What to Pack
Grippy footwear for damp boardwalks, a light rain layer or poncho, drinking water, snacks, and sun protection. Add warm layers outside summer.
Best Time to Visit
Crowds peak mid‑day. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for a calmer experience, especially in autumn when the Upper Lakes feel particularly peaceful. Secure a timed‑entry ticket in advance for the slot you want.
