Veliki Prštavac

Veliki Prštavac is a broad waterfall spilling over a moss-covered tufa face at Lake Galovac, one of the Upper Lakes’ signature falls. Water runs across much of the cliff in separate white streams, so it feels wider than a single-plunge waterfall. Keep it on your Upper Lakes walk; it’s a striking stop and sits close to the separate Mali Prštavac. You reach it on foot through the park, not as a quick roadside pullout.

The park’s Entrance 2 Program E is the most focused route: 5.1 km and about two to three hours, with a short electric-boat crossing of Kozjak and a panoramic-vehicle return. The longer K1 and K2 circuits also pass here before continuing to the Lower Lakes; they’re full-day walks of 16.5 and 17.5 km.

The waterfall belongs to the lakeside walking network. As the boardwalk bends through the Upper Lakes, the falls can come into view, slip behind the trees, then open up close by. Give yourself a moment at the first clear look, then enjoy the changing angle as you continue. Program E also takes in Mali Prštavac, so you can see both without adding a separate detour.

The water drops roughly 28 metres over a wide face, with moss and low green plants along the ledges. Lake Galovac feeds the cascade from above; below, the channels spill into clear pools. Look across the whole cliff instead of following just one stream—the width is what sets this waterfall apart.

Plitvice’s tufa barriers form as calcium carbonate settles out of the water. Mosses, algae and bacteria help build the porous mineral ledges that divide one lake from the next. They keep growing and eroding, so the waterfall landscape is always changing rather than a fixed stone staircase. That process shapes the park’s lake-and-fall system as a whole; there isn’t a separate origin story documented for this one cascade.

Mali Prštavac is the nearby, separately named fall in the Upper Lakes; the park’s route descriptions include both Prštavci. The “Great Waterfall,” or Veliki Slap, is a different feature farther north in the Lower Lakes. If you’re checking a map, use the Croatian name to keep the two places straight.

This is a photo stop. A view with the green plants or clear pool in the foreground gives the broad cliff a sense of scale, and the boardwalk’s changing angles help you fit the full cascade into the frame. Strong midday sun can sit above the falls and make the water and rock harder to expose evenly; softer light is kinder to the contrast. Water volume varies with conditions, so treat a post-rain surge as a bonus, not a guarantee.
