Pros & cons
PROS
- Dramatic confluence where the Lower Lakes join to form the Korana
- Classic viewpoints are easy to reach from Entrance 1 via Program B
CONS
- Boardwalks can be slick from spray and slow-moving crowds
- Narrow walkways create bottlenecks at peak times
Overview
Sastavci is the frothy finale of the Lower Lakes—an amphitheater of falls where the lakes "assemble" and surge into the Korana River. It sits in the same lower‑canyon setting as the park’s famed Veliki slap (the Great Waterfall, 78 m), so you get big sound, mist in the air, and those cinematic cliffs.
What You’ll See
Expect curtains of water pouring over travertine ledges into a tight limestone canyon. From the boardwalks you’ll often spot fish in the ultra‑clear water, and the constant spray makes the scene feel alive. The eastern rim viewpoints serve up sweeping looks at the cascades and the river forming below.
How It Formed
This is classic karst. Mineral‑rich streams deposit travertine (tufa) on moss and plants wherever the flow slows and aerates; over millennia (since roughly 12,000–15,000 years ago) those deposits build dams and ledges that shape waterfalls like Sastavci. Barriers can add millimeters each year, occasionally drowning older steps and rerouting water. The Lower Lakes’ limestone canyon favors narrow channels and taller drops, while the Upper Lakes’ dolomite platform produces broader cascades.
Visiting & Route
For the simplest access and the postcard angles, start at Entrance 1 and follow the park’s marked Lower Lakes route (Program B). The classic viewpoints are along the eastern rim. Boardwalks get wet and slick—good tread is worth it—and spray near major lookouts is normal. Obey the rules: no swimming, and stay on marked paths to protect active tufa growth.
Facilities Nearby
- Restrooms: at Entrance 1, at the P3 electric‑boat stop, and at panoramic‑train stops St1–St3.
- Food and drink: simple cafés at P3 and St1–St3; fuller restaurant options sit just outside the gates near Entrance 1.
- Parking: use the official lots at Entrance 1 (or Entrance 2 if starting there). Your park ticket also covers the electric boat and panoramic train.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn usually mean higher flows and fewer crowds than midsummer; winter can produce striking ice formations. Summer brings the most visitors and sometimes lower flows. For breathing room (and nicer light), go early or later in the day.
Photography Tips
A polarizing filter cuts glare and deepens the turquoise; overcast light is perfect for silky long exposures. Expect mist—bring a lens cloth or simple rain cover.
Ticketing & Seasonal Notes
Tickets are date‑ and entrance‑specific and must be purchased at least 2 days in advance; you can enter 30 minutes before up to 1 hour after your time slot. Opening hours and some trails change with the season, and winter can bring partial closures.
