Velike kaskade

Overview

Velike Kaskade is the Great Cascades section of the Lower Lakes, a staircase of small waterfalls between Lake Gavanovac and Lake Kaluđerovac. You follow wooden boardwalks right beside the rushing water, with viewpoints near Sastavci and below Veliki Slap.

Why These Cascades Exist (Geology)

The lakes and falls are built by living tufa barriers—natural dams that grow as calcium carbonate precipitates from mineral-rich water, aided by algae, mosses, and microbes. It’s an active process: barriers keep forming and subtly reshaping the cascades over time.

Visiting Logistics

Marked routes guide you through the Lower Lakes; electric boats on Kozjak and panoramic buses link the main areas so you can knit together a loop. There are no toilets, taps, or cafés right at the cascades—plan stops at the entrances or at major boat/transport hubs. Swimming is not allowed. Personal photography doesn’t require a permit.

Best Time to Visit

Spring usually delivers the strongest flow; summer to early autumn brings vivid water colors. Go early or late for softer light and fewer crowds on the narrow boardwalks. In winter, operations vary by conditions—Lower Lakes are usually open while some upper sections may close.

Wildlife

The crystal-clear water often reveals fish like European chub and trout cruising the pools—easy to spot from the boardwalks.

Safety & Etiquette

Boardwalks can be wet and slick from spray—wear grippy shoes, keep behind railings, and stay on marked paths to protect the fragile tufa.
