About Cavendish Grove

Why stop

  • Distinctive sugar-maple grove and quiet picnic setting
  • Trail links make it useful beyond a quick picnic

Heads up

  • Winter access is unmaintained and onsite facilities close
  • The experience is quieter and less dramatic than the park's marquee beaches
A day-use area in Prince Edward Island National Park, opened in summer 2007 on the property that once held the Rainbow Valley amusement park. The name comes from a large stand of sugar maple trees, rare on Prince Edward Island and one of the site's most significant natural features. The setting makes for a peaceful picnic.

The site is not maintained between September 30 and Victoria Day. In that period the washroom and kitchen shelter are closed, trails are not maintained in winter, and emergency services are limited. Visitors may still explore on foot, by snowshoe, or on skis if they are self-sufficient.

Access is at 8780 Route 6 in Cavendish, with its own parking area, making it a simple add-on to a drive or a beach day in the area.

Trails in this section link the grove with Cavendish Beach and Cavendish Campground, part of a network with more than 12 km of hiking and cycling routes running through beaches, dunes, freshwater ponds, salt marshes, and mixed woods. Walkers regularly describe the path here as well groomed. No fixed loop distance is given here, since route lengths vary across descriptions, so it helps to plan by time on foot.

Honest scaleThis is a low-key stop next to the park's marquee beaches.

This is a low-key stop next to the park's marquee beaches. The draw is open ground, tables, maples, hardwood woods, a walkable groomed trail, and the Rainbow Valley history that brings many Island families back. Anyone expecting the dune shoreline's drama will want to pair the grove with a trip down the trail toward the coast.
