Hiking Balsam Hollow Trail

A gentle Anne of Green Gables walkBalsam Hollow Trail is an easy 0.

Balsam Hollow Trail is an easy 0.8-kilometre return walk from Green Gables Heritage Place, starting along Lover's Lane before following a brook through shaded mixed woodland. It is a short, quiet trail rather than a scenic lookout or a strenuous hike. I'd keep it on your list if you are already visiting the house, especially if you like the landscapes behind the stories as much as the house itself. Allow about 30 minutes for the walk, more if you stop to read the signs or take your time at the bridges. The official park list calls it a loop, while the detailed Green Gables trail information describes an 800-metre return. This record follows the latter convention, with the mapped corridor stored once.

What the route feels likeThe trail begins behind Green Gables House on Lover's Lane, an old gravel lane that once ran…

The trail begins behind Green Gables House on Lover's Lane, an old gravel lane that once ran from the barnyard to the pastures. It starts broad and easy, then leaves the lane by a small bridge and settles into the trees beside the brook. The surface is packed gravel with gentle rises, but it is not perfectly smooth: expect exposed roots, wooden bridges and a few stair sections. After the second bridge, the path runs on both sides of the stream in long, narrow loops. The west side climbs a little higher up the hollow and has the more noticeable stairs. This is the kind of walk where the brook and the canopy do most of the work. There is no summit payoff waiting at the end, just a peaceful turn through the woods.

A large staircase comes near the end. If you would rather avoid it, turn around there and return the way you came. That is a sensible shorter version, not a consolation prize, because Lover's Lane and the brookside section are the heart of the experience. The trail is considered easy, but the roots, bridges and stairs mean it is not wheelchair accessible.

The story in the woodsLover's Lane is the reason this little trail feels more specific than an ordinary woodland…

Lover's Lane is the reason this little trail feels more specific than an ordinary woodland stroll. It is the name L.M. Montgomery used for this path in her writing, and Parks Canada describes it as one of her favourite places, somewhere she returned for quiet and comfort. Interpretive signs along the route connect the real landscape with those descriptions of trees, ferns, birds and the Acadian forest. The surrounding woods include balsam fir, spruce and birch, with ferns filling the forest floor. Read a sign, then look back at the trees around you. The point is not to find a dramatic view; it is to notice the small landscape that helped shape Montgomery's sense of place.

Park at Green Gables Heritage Place, 8619 Route 6, and follow the signs behind the house. Parking is free. Public washrooms are inside the Visitor Centre and in the barnyard. The Cordial Café is a separate stop at the site, with coffee, drinks, baked goods and Island-made ice cream, so it is easy to add before or after the walk. The heritage place is seasonal. Outside the maintained season, visitors may still use the trails, but Parks Canada warns that they are not maintained and there is no Parks Canada emergency response. Dogs are welcome on park trails when kept on a leash no longer than three metres.
