Hiking Homestead Trail - Simpson Loop

The Simpson Loop is a 6 km stacked loop from 355 Grahams Lane in Cavendish, the shorter of the two Homestead routes. Allow about two hours for a normal walk with time at the water and bridges. Parks Canada rates it moderate, but that means moderate by trail length and gently rolling sections rather than a mountain climb. Packed gravel keeps the walking straightforward; exposed roots and the distance make it more than a quick stroll. It suits visitors who want a substantial park walk without a high-elevation commitment, and gives you the signature bay views with a smaller time bill than the long variant. The separate MacNeill Loop is 10 km, so check that you are following the Simpson route.

Forest first, then the bayLeave the trailhead on a broad, packed-gravel path through spruce forest.

Leave the trailhead on a broad, packed-gravel path through spruce forest. After roughly a kilometre, the trees open to New London Bay and the sand dunes beyond it. A picnic table at the opening gives you a natural pause before the route turns into its coastal section. The trail follows the bay and its low inlets, crossing several sturdy Parks Canada bridges. The changes underfoot matter more than the elevation: gravel, a few exposed roots, short rolling sections, and bridge approaches rather than a long sustained climb. The water is a view along the route, not a beach walk, so the bay-and-dune outlooks are the main coastal payoff.

Fields on the way aroundThe loop eventually bends through active farm fields before returning toward the water.

The loop eventually bends through active farm fields before returning toward the water. That mix is the point of this walk: spruce, red shoreline, bay, dunes and working farmland arrive in one circuit instead of one dramatic summit. The trail also circles fields that include a farm homestead in the landscape's older story. Open shoreline and field sections have little shade, according to a detailed visitor account, so the walk feels more exposed there than the wooded opening. Expect the best views at the transitions where the forest gives way to water and at the bridge crossings, where the tread, wetland and bay fit in one frame.

Making it workUse the Homestead Trail access at 355 Grahams Lane.

Use the Homestead Trail access at 355 Grahams Lane. Parks Canada lists restrooms and accessible facilities among the trail features, along with a lookout; no food service is on the route, so treat Cavendish as a separate stop. Dogs are welcome on the trail when leashed, but dogs are not allowed on park beaches from April 1 through October 15. Cycling is allowed, with hybrid or mountain bikes recommended. For a useful photo, frame the bridge with the red gravel approach and the bay beyond it rather than photographing the water alone. The route's practical commitment is its length and open stretches, not steep climbing.
