About Waterfall Creek Recreation Reserve

A small lakeside reserve at the western edge of Wānaka, this is the natural turnaround and entry point for the mellow Waterfall Creek Track and the longer, hillier Glendhu Bay Track. It sits just beyond Wānaka Station Park and the shoreline willow everyone photographs. Expect wide‑open lake and island views from the start.

The reserve is effectively open 24 hours. Mornings and evenings are the sweet spot—calmer light, fewer people, and cooler temperatures.

A large gravel car park sits at the end of Ruby Island Road, signed for Waterfall Creek. There’s a basic long‑drop/composting toilet by the track end.
Dogs are allowed on leash. The lakeside path is shared‑use; cyclists should give way to walkers.
There’s a short stretch of unsealed road near the far access; normal cars manage it fine with care.

Cross the little footbridge over Waterfall Creek, then choose to continue west toward the Glendhu Bay Track (15–16 km one way with short steep sections) or turn back to town for a classic out‑and‑back.
