Roy's Peak Track

Overview

If you want the postcard shot of Lake Wanaka framed by rolling ridgelines and big Southern Alps energy, this is the one. Roys Peak Track is a 16 km/10 mile out‑and‑back with roughly 1,228 m/4,030 ft of gain to the 1,578 m summit. It’s non‑technical but relentlessly uphill, a steady grind of switchbacks that rewards you with ever‑expanding lake and Mount Aspiring views.

Route and Experience

From the car park the path climbs a wide benched track through private sheep farmland before rising into open tussock. Expect little relief from the grade—this is fitness, not scrambling. Most hikers reach the famous ridgeline photo spot in about 2–2.5 hours; it’s not the summit. Push another ~30 minutes for the true peak and a quieter panorama. Queues for photos at the viewpoint are common on busy days.

Facilities and Logistics

The trailhead is about 6 km (3.7 mi) from Wānaka on the Wanaka–Mount Aspiring Road. The car park often fills by around 9 am. Do not park on the roadside—fines are issued. There are toilets at the famous viewpoint, and no water on the track.

Best Times to Hike

Sunrise and sunset are the sweet spots: softer light, cooler temps, and slightly thinner crowds. Shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) and even winter can be fantastic, but expect cold and wind. Note the annual lambing closure from October 1 to November 10.

Hazards and Seasonality

Weather turns quickly here. In winter and cold snaps, snow and ice can linger near the top; crampons or microspikes and warm layers may be necessary. The upper mountain can include avalanche terrain in winter conditions. The New Zealand sun is harsh—bring sun protection and at least 2 liters of water per person.

Gear and Tips

Think simple but prepared: sturdy footwear (boots in wet/winter, runners in dry summer), windbreaker and warm layers year‑round, sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, and trekking poles to save knees on the steep descent. There’s no shade and no water. Dogs are not permitted.

A Worthy Alternative

If you want similar big‑lake, big‑mountain scenery with fewer people, consider nearby Isthmus Peak. It’s generally quieter yet still delivers classic Wānaka views.
