Ke'anae Arboretum

A six-acre blend of rainforest and botanical garden along the Road to Hāna, Ke‘anae Arboretum is the low-effort, high-reward stop where you can stretch your legs, breathe in the jungle air, and see those famed rainbow eucalyptus up close. It’s free and open daily, and the short path makes it an easy add to any Hāna itinerary.

• At the far end, you’ll reach traditional lo‘i kalo (taro terraces), a nod to the area’s long agricultural heritage.
• Along Pi‘ina‘au Stream and in the canopy, keep an ear out for birds; it’s not a wildlife hotspot, but birders do enjoy quick sightings here.

Practicalities

• Parking is in small pullouts directly off the highway; spaces are few and turn over quickly. Don’t leave valuables in the car.
• There are no restrooms, water, or food on site. Bring what you need and plan pit stops elsewhere.
• Expect mosquitoes and occasional mud, especially after rain. The pavement gives way to more natural surfaces near the lo‘i.
• Wayfinding is simple, but signage can be sparse—use the entrance map as your guide.

How long to spend

Budget 20–45 minutes. You can do a quick eucalyptus photo stop in 10–15, or linger longer among the labeled plantings.
