Kīpahulu Visitor Center is Haleakalā National Park's information stop in the coastal district, 12 miles past Hāna on Hāna Highway. If you're heading to the Pīpīwai Trail, ʻOheʻo, or the coast, it's a sensible first stop: the information desk can help with trail suggestions and current conditions, and the exhibits put the landscape in context. Staff availability varies, so treat ranger help as a useful chance to get oriented before choosing how far to go.

The natural and cultural history displays include an outrigger canoe exhibit about the ties between land and people. The Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association bookstore sells books, posters, and educational materials. There is parking, drinking water, and a bottle-filling station; the center and its restrooms are wheelchair-accessible.

The coastal district is 12 miles beyond Hāna, and there is no food or gasoline for sale inside the park. Eat before you drive in and fill the tank first, especially if you still have the return trip ahead. The bookstore is for educational materials, not a substitute for food or fuel.

The name and the landKa ʻĀina O Ka Makani Kāʻili Aloha means “Land of the love-snatching wind.”

Ka ʻĀina O Ka Makani Kāʻili Aloha means “Land of the love-snatching wind.” Kīpahulu protects intact ahupuaʻa, traditional Hawaiian land divisions that link resources from the sea to the summit. Native Hawaiians have lived along this coast for hundreds of years, and the area remains part of a living culture.

Life in the streamsWater running down from the mountain supports endemic gobies and freshwater shrimp.

Water running down from the mountain supports endemic gobies and freshwater shrimp. Those fish descend from saltwater ancestors; along streams on Pīpīwai Trail, visitors may spot the rock-climbing goby. It's a good reminder to look beyond the waterfalls: the moving water itself is part of what makes Kīpahulu distinct.
