Overview

Palona Brook Falls is a two‑tier cascade tucked into cool rainforest, with the photogenic Palona Cave (a sandstone overhang studded with limestone formations) right next door. It’s an underrated detour off Lady Carrington Drive: quick to reach, atmospheric under the palms and mossy boulders, and at its best after rain.

Getting There

Most people park on Sir Bertram Stevens Drive at the south end of Lady Carrington Drive and walk in. From the gate, it’s about 1.8 km on the wide, shaded road before a signed turn (“Limestone Cave”) leads left for roughly 800 m to the cave and waterfall. Return the same way for a ~5.2 km round trip with ~120 m of gentle up‑and‑down, typically 1–2 hours.

Want more walking? Combine Lady Carrington Drive with the Forest Path for a scenic loop of about 8 km, or start from Waterfall Station via the Couranga Track for a bigger day (out‑and‑back ~15.6 km, ~420 m gain, 4.5–5 hours, moderate because of length and one steeper, rocky section).

What You’ll See

The approach is classic Royal rainforest: clusters of Cabbage Tree Palms, ferny gullies and moss‑slick rocks. At the end, the cave frames the falls—a neat juxtaposition of sandstone and calcite where dripping water has built stalactites and other formations.

Trail Conditions & Navigation

Lady Carrington Drive is wide and well‑maintained, but the final 800 m to the cave is rougher, sometimes overgrown, with fallen logs, rocks and short steeper bits. The cave turn can be easy to miss (the sign isn’t obvious), so keep your eyes peeled or bring navigation. After wet weather, expect mud—and leeches.

Facilities

There are no toilets or water on the trail. A small rest spot (Bola Creek) with a single bench sits about 700 m from the gate. The nearest public toilets are at Waterfall Station. Parking is roadside at the Lady Carrington Drive gate; bays are limited and can fill on busy days.

Fees

A vehicle entry fee applies for Royal National Park. If you’re entering on foot from Waterfall Station or via public transport, the vehicle fee doesn’t apply.

Best Time to Visit

Go after recent rainfall—the falls can slow to a trickle in extended dry periods. Tracks can be slick when wet, so wear grippy footwear. Start early if you’re tackling the longer Waterfall Station route, and plan extra time to poke around the cave (a small head torch is handy).

Wildlife & Nature Notes

Keep an eye out for wallabies along the track and birdlife like Wonga Pigeons, scrubwrens and rufous fantails in the rainforest. In season, you may spot native orchids near the gullies.

In leechy conditions, long socks and repellent are worth it.
