Pros & cons
PROS
- Seamless station-to-station route—no car or shuttle needed
- On‑route campground at Uloola Falls for an easy overnight
CONS
- Long firetrail sections can feel monotonous at the start
- Can be boggy and slippery after rain, especially near Karloo Pool
- Shared with mountain bikes on sections of the corridor
Best without a car: start at Waterfall Station and finish at Heathcote Station. If driving, park at Waterfall Station or at Audley (Currawong Flat/Wattle Forest); vehicle entry fees apply inside the park.
Limited shade and mobile reception; no drinking water on track. Expect cyclists, muddy sections after rain, a slippery creek crossing at Karloo Pool, and a short steep climb near Heathcote.
Overview
A classic Royal National Park traverse, the Uloola Walking Track runs 11 km one way through heath and sandstone country with waterfalls, wildflowers, and broad ridge views. It’s officially graded moderate and typically takes 4–6 hours, though many walkers cover the popular Waterfall → Uloola Falls → Karloo Pool → Heathcote variant in about 3–4 hours. Expect roughly 200–250 m of cumulative elevation change.
Route and feel
From Waterfall Station you’re quickly on a wide firetrail that delivers fast miles but can feel a bit monotonous. The track narrows and gets more interesting as you approach Uloola Falls, then turns rockier toward Karloo Pool before a short, steep climb to Heathcote. Wayfinding is straightforward and signage is clear. Parts of the corridor are also popular with mountain bikers—stay alert and share the trail.
Highlights
- Uloola Falls: a pretty cascade with a basic toilet and adjacent campground; flows vary and are best after rain.
- Karloo Pool: emerald water, slabby rock ledges, and a great swim on warm days.
- Sandstone “whaleback” forms and ridge views across the park.
- Seasonal wildflowers in spring—keep an eye out for gymea lily spikes—and the hanging nests of the water-loving rock warbler under sandstone ledges.
- Cultural notes: Aboriginal engravings and sharpening grooves occur along the route; look, learn, and leave them undisturbed.
Logistics
Best done car-free: start at Waterfall Station and finish at Heathcote Station—no shuttles or road walking required. Alternate access exists at Audley (Currawong Flat or Wattle Forest) if you’re driving, but vehicle entry fees apply inside the park. There’s no drinking water on the track; carry all you need. Mobile reception can be patchy. Camping at Uloola Falls requires booking in advance if you plan to split the walk over two days.
Conditions and cautions
After rain, expect boggy sections between Uloola Falls and Karloo Pool, and slippery rock around the pool. The creek crossing at Karloo Pool can wet feet. Shade is limited on some firetrail stretches—start early on hot days and bring sun protection.
Best time to hike
Year-round is workable. Spring brings the most impressive wildflower displays. Summer is prime for a swim at Karloo Pool—start early to beat heat and crowds. Winter offers cooler temps for longer days out. Photographers should aim for overcast or post‑rain conditions to see Uloola Falls at its best.
Who it’s for
Walkers who want an easy-to-logistics through-hike with classic RNP variety. If you’re chasing cliffline ocean views, the longer Coast track is the park’s marquee option; if you want a pleasant bushwalk with swims and a campground option, this one delivers.
