Overview

Tucked beside the junction of McKell Avenue and Lady Wakehurst Drive near Waterfall, this is a small, rustic picnic pull-off wrapped in rainforest and Sydney redgums. Think quick bite and nature fix rather than a big, facility-heavy area.

On the trails

From the picnic area you can step straight onto well-loved routes: the Forest Path, Couranga walking track, and the historic Lady Carrington Drive (popular with cyclists as a gentle ride). It also works as a mid-ride pit stop if you’re touring the park by road bike.

Wildlife

The broader park hosts over 300 bird species—look for sulphur‑crested cockatoos, crimson rosellas, yellow‑tailed black cockatoos and rainbow lorikeets flitting through the canopy. Around the Hacking River valley, sightings can include possums, sugar gliders and wallabies, plus the usual mix of reptiles, bats and amphibians. Bring binoculars and keep a respectful distance from any wildlife you encounter.

Logistics

Royal National Park generally opens 7:00am–8:30pm and may close during poor weather or high fire danger. A park entry fee applies ($12 per vehicle per day). You can pay at entry stations, pay machines, the Audley Visitor Centre, or via the Park’nPay app; different per‑person rates apply for vehicles with more than eight seats. This picnic area is intentionally basic: no toilets, BBQs or drinking water are provided—pack in what you need and pack out your rubbish. If you want full facilities, use larger hubs elsewhere in the park.

Best time to visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon on weekdays for quieter vibes and softer forest light; the park opens at 7:00am, which also lines up nicely with peak bird activity. Weekends see more pass‑through traffic, so arrive before 10:00am or after 3:00pm for a calmer stop.
