Royal National Park Railway Station

Overview

This isn’t a regular commuter stop anymore—it’s the heritage tram terminus inside the park. Vintage trams operated by the Sydney Tramway Museum shuttle from Loftus and set you down at a simple platform that’s a handy springboard to short walks and picnicking.

What to Expect

The platform itself is barebones: no toilets, no café, no water. Treat it as a drop-off point. The closest facilities are a short walk away at Bungoona Lookout carpark (toilets) or down to the Audley Visitor Centre precinct for flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables and free electric BBQs. From the terminus, it’s roughly 1 km downhill via the Honeymoon Track to Audley Weir and the Visitor Centre.

Why Go

The ride is the charm—rattling through bush on a vintage tram is a fun, low-effort way to start a walk. Step off and you’re minutes from lookouts, riverside lawns and trails, without dealing with parking in the Audley hub.

History Snapshot

• 9 March 1886: short branch from Loftus opens to serve park visitors and a military camp.
• Names changed a few times before settling on Royal National Park Station in 1955.
• Electrified in 1926; weekend traffic peaked in the 1930s.
• Original station closed in 1978; a replacement opened nearby for the park’s 1979 centenary.
• Regular rail services ended in 1991; the heritage tramway began running to the platform on 1 May 1993.

Logistics

• Tram operations: typically Wednesdays and Sundays (archived hours indicate Wed 10:00–15:00, Sun 10:00–17:00; check current timetable before you go).
• Park entry fee: $12 per vehicle per day; pedestrians are not charged.
• Audley Visitor Centre hours: 8:30am–4:30pm daily (closed Christmas Day).
• Mobile reception can be patchy in the park; download an emergency location app in advance. Pets aren’t permitted in the park except certified assistance animals.

Best Time to Visit

Come on a Wednesday or Sunday when trams run. Aim for a morning arrival so you can pair the ride with a walk to Bungoona Lookout or a relaxed lunch at Audley before catching a later tram back. Light is softer earlier and the riverside lawns at Audley are more mellow before the midday rush.
