Overview

Pool Flat is a grassy riverside clearing on the Hacking River in the Audley precinct — a laid‑back base for spreading a rug, letting the kids splash, and launching a kayak right from the bank. It’s a short, level stroll from Triangle carpark, so you get the scenery without the schlep.

What You’ll Do

  • Picnic under the trees, then wander the river’s edge for birdlife.
  • Paddle or swim: the river here is typically calm, making it friendly for beginners and families.
  • If you didn’t bring a boat, the nearby Audley Boatshed hires canoes and kayaks, and there’s a café close by for coffee or lunch.

Wildlife

The Hacking River valley is a magnet for birds — expect cockatoos, rosellas, lorikeets and, at times, pelicans cruising the water. Around the fringes you might spot wallabies, plus the usual amphibians and reptiles that love river country. Early and late in the day are your best windows for sightings.

Facilities & Rules

  • Facilities: flush toilets, picnic tables, and parking nearby.
  • River safety: currents may be present — supervise swimmers and paddlers.
  • House rules: no pets (except assistance animals), no drones, no smoking. Fishing is allowed with a NSW recreational fishing licence.

Getting There

From Princes Highway, turn onto Farnell Avenue and drive across Audley Weir. Turn right into Triangle carpark and follow the riverside path a short distance to Pool Flat.

Best Time to Visit

Open 7:00am–8:30pm, with gates locking at closing. Weekends can be popular; aim for early morning or mid‑week for easy parking and quieter lawns. If you’re chasing photos, soft morning or late‑afternoon light flatters the river.
