Overview

Hightop Mountain Overlook caps a steady Appalachian Trail climb with a big-payoff panorama. It’s the highest peak in the South District, and the rocky outcrop near the summit opens to far-reaching views over the Virginia Piedmont.

Getting There & The Hike

Start from the Hightop Mountain parking area on Skyline Drive around mile 66.7. Follow the Appalachian Trail to the summit area, watching for a short side path to the viewpoint. It’s about 3 miles round trip with roughly 900 feet of elevation gain, and the footing is typical Blue Ridge—dirt with some rocks and roots. If you’re curious, a brief spur near the top leads to an AT shelter.

What Makes It Different

Unlike the park’s roadside pullouts, Hightop makes you earn the view. The payoff is a quieter summit scene and a sweeping eastern outlook from a natural rock perch—one of the South District’s standout vistas without the crowds of the park’s headline scrambles.

What You’ll See

Expect an expansive, unobstructed view to the east from the rocky ledge. The approach is mostly wooded with occasional peeks through the trees, especially when leaves are down.

Wildlife

Along the trail, hikers commonly note white‑tailed deer and songbirds, and sometimes wild turkeys. Keep your distance from any wildlife and enjoy the sounds of the forest as you climb.

Best Time to Visit

• Weekday mornings are best for snagging a spot in the small lot.
• Come on a clear day for the longest views.
• Late fall through early spring offers more glimpses along the trail when foliage is down and can be less ticky than midsummer.

Know Before You Go

There are no facilities at the parking area or along the trail—bring water and snacks. The path is well-marked but can be rocky and rooty in places; sturdy footwear helps. Dogs are permitted on leash.
