Thornton Gap Entrance Station

Overview

Thornton Gap is the Skyline Drive entrance on US‑211 between Luray and Sperryville, roughly around milepost 31.5. It’s one of the park’s four main gateways, and it drops you straight onto the ridge so you can head north or south without fuss.

Why start here

• Central positioning makes it an efficient launch point for both the northern and central districts.
• You’re minutes from classic hikes like Marys Rock and sections of the Appalachian Trail, plus the scenic Marys Rock Tunnel just south of the gate.

What to expect at the gate

This is a staffed fee station—have your pass or card ready and you’ll roll through. Don’t expect amenities right at the booth: no restrooms, no food, no fuel. Plan your first stops inside the park (Elkwallow or Pinnacles are the nearest restrooms, each a short drive away).

Wildlife and driving

You’re immediately on Skyline Drive, where white‑tailed deer, black bears, and wild turkeys are commonly seen along the roadside. Drive slowly, especially early and late in the day when animals are active and light is changing.

Navigation tips

Mileposts run along the west side of Skyline Drive and are the park’s preferred wayfinding system for locating overlooks, trailheads, and services. Use them and you’ll never feel lost.

Best time to visit

• Weekends and holidays can mean lines at the fee station—arrive early in the morning to breeze through.
• For photography and wildlife spotting on the drive, early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and activity.
• Shoulder seasons (spring bloom, peak fall color) are beautiful but busiest—go midweek if you can.
