This is an easy-to-moderate ridge circuit that loops the broad, flat summit of Big Flat Mountain around the Loft Mountain complex. Expect wide-open vistas with minimal climbing, forested stretches of oak and mountain laurel, and a laid-back feel compared to Shenandoah’s waterfall hikes. The core loop runs about 3.4–4.7 miles total depending on which connectors you use; most hikers land near 3.7 miles. Routes typically stitch together the Appalachian Trail, a short segment of the Frazier Discovery Trail, and sometimes a maintenance/fire road.
Start from the Loft Mountain Wayside parking area on Skyline Drive (mile ~79.5), cross the road, and pick up the blue-blazed Frazier Discovery Trail to reach the ridge. From there, it’s classic Skyline-Drive hiking: airy viewpoints and gentle grades rather than deep hollows. The loop skirts the campground, so in-season you may hear distant bustle; in spring and fall it’s much quieter. Trail tread is mostly dirt with some rocky bits—nothing technical.
Scenery-wise, this hike is about big South District views and the unusual, level summit—Big Flat Mountain’s broad top stands out in the Blue Ridge thanks to erosion-resistant rock. Keep an eye out for seasonal wildflowers, oak-hickory forest, deer browsing near the edges, and the occasional black bear. If you want waterfalls or a strenuous workout, look elsewhere; if you want quick reward per mile, this is a solid pick.
Logistics are friendly. There’s paved access and seasonal services at the Wayside and campground (water, restrooms). Multiple connectors mean you can shorten or extend the loop, or hop along the Appalachian Trail for more ridge walking. Do bring a map: numerous campground spurs and side paths can tempt you off the main loop.
Best time to hike: spring for wildflowers and thinner crowds; fall for color and crisp views; winter for solitude and clear skies (with some services closed). Summer is lush but busiest when the campground is full—start early for parking and quieter overlooks.
Important note for dog owners: a short section of the Frazier Discovery Trail used on the standard loop is signed no pets. If hiking with a dog, use an alternate line on the AT and a maintenance road spur to avoid that Frazier segment, and always follow posted signs.
Tips: start from the north end of the Wayside lot and take care crossing Skyline Drive; wear sturdy shoes for occasional rocks and post-rain mud; and resist those spur trails into campsites if you want the best views and flow.
Park at Loft Mountain Wayside on Skyline Drive (mile ~79.5). Start from the north end of the lot and carefully cross Skyline Drive to the blue-blazed Frazier Discovery Trail.
Watch for no-pets signage on the Frazier Discovery Trail, take care crossing Skyline Drive, and avoid spur paths leading into campsites; sections can be rocky or muddy after rain.
