Big Run Overlook

Overview

A classic Skyline Drive roadside stop with a twist: Big Run Overlook peers into the Big Run basin—the park’s largest single watershed—from a northwest-facing perch at about 2,860 feet. It’s not the grandest vista in summer, but it doubles as a launch point into one of the South District’s wildest, most remote valleys.

What makes it different

Below the wall is the sprawling Big Run drainage—an enormous catchment that defines this corner of the park. You’ll sometimes find an interactive photo timelapse setup here tracking the seasons. Across the road, rock hounds will appreciate outcrops of Weverton sandstone with quartz pebbles.

What you’ll see

When leaves are down (winter to early spring), you get broad looks toward the Shenandoah Valley. In leafy seasons, shrubs and trees can crowd the view, so manage expectations—this one’s more about the landscape story and trail access than a year‑round postcard.

Hiking access

At the south end of the overlook, a short walkway through the wall leads to trail signage for the Big Run Loop and routes descending into the basin. Expect steep grades and a stout climb back—great for backpackers, anglers, and anyone craving solitude.

Wildlife

The basin supports healthy wildlife—think deer, songbirds, and occasional black bear sightings—with brook trout in Big Run itself. Dawn and dusk are your best bets for activity.

Best time to visit

• Winter and early spring: clearest views and beautifully stark ridgelines.
• Sunset: the northwest aspect catches warm evening light, especially on clear days.
• Weekdays are typically calmer; sunset on weekends draws more visitors.

Know before you go

This is a small pullout with limited parking and no services. If it’s full, use the nearby Doyles River parking area a short walk away. Stock up on water, snacks, and any last-minute needs at Loft Mountain facilities when they’re in season.
