Loft Mountain Campground

Loft Mountain Campground is a 207-site National Park Service campground at mile 79.5 of Skyline Drive, atop Big Flat Mountain in Shenandoah's southern district. It is known for views east and west, sunsets, and a spot close to waterfall trails. Choose it for a couple of nights outside with hikes close by.

Fifty sites are tent-only; the standard RV and tent sites are nonelectric, with deep back-ins that fit most RVs. Site layout varies: some campers find their spots roomy and quiet, while others report sloped pads, tight turns, or close neighbors. Check the specific site before booking if you have a large rig or need a level tent pad. The mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites gives you options, though the park recommends reservations for weekends and holidays.

A seasonal camp store sells ice and firewood. During the operating season, the campground also has potable water, flush toilets, coin-operated showers, laundry, food-storage lockers, trash and recycling, and a dump station. There are no electric or water hookups at the sites. Plan on campsite meals rather than a restaurant stop here. The National Park Service lists two accessible sites and accessible shower and laundry facilities.

The campground amphitheater is a short walk from the sites; the park points campers there for clear-night stargazing and meteor showers. Wildlife is part of the evening too, with campers often reporting deer around dusk. Nearby trails lead to Jones Run and Doyles River waterfalls and into Big Run Wilderness. The campground operates seasonally, so check the current dates before planning a stay.
