Overview

Tucked along the Alligator Hill Trail, Islands Overlook rewards a steady forest climb with a broad view over Lake Michigan. It’s a quieter, hike-to vantage point compared with the drive-up overlooks elsewhere, and on moody days you might even spot a freighter ghosting across the horizon.

Getting There

Access the overlook via the Alligator Hill Trail off Stocking Rd near the DH Day area. The trail network here is well-used and includes multiple loops and a couple of signed lookouts; this overlook sits along that system rather than at a roadside pullout.

Trail Notes

Expect a steady grade and some sandy footing. The paths are relatively wide and also used by equestrians. Wayfinding can feel a bit confusing in spots given the loop options, so pay attention at junctions. Seasonal bonuses: hikers often note mushrooms after wet spells and ripe berries along the trail in summer.

Best Time to Visit

Crowds are typically lighter in the mornings. Patterns show Tuesday and Thursday late afternoons into evening as busier, while weekends (especially Saturdays) tend to be mellow through much of the day. Aim for a morning window for easier parking at the trailhead and calmer trails; overcast days can deliver beautifully soft lake views.
