Overview
This is the North Unit’s signature viewpoint: a very short walk to a 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps stone shelter perched above a sweeping bend of the Little Missouri River. Expect big badlands buttes, a ribbon of cottonwoods along the river, and a vista that feels timeless. It’s a quick stop, but it’s a must-stop.
The Walk
From the signed parking area, follow a short path to a viewing deck, then descend steps to the stone shelter. The round-trip distance is about 0.27 miles total, and it’s easy with a brief climb back to the car. If you want more, informal rim paths branch along the clifftop for additional angles—take care near edges, especially when windy.
What You’ll See
The badlands here show classic layered bands, including gray-blue bentonite clay and a darker coal (lignite) seam across the landscape. The river snakes far below through cottonwood-juniper bottoms, and the shelter itself adds a gorgeous historic foreground for photos.
Wildlife
Bison frequently roam the area, and careful observers sometimes spot bighorn sheep on the slopes. Mule deer are common, and prairie dogs chatter from nearby colonies. Keep your distance—wildlife has the right of way here.
Best Times to Hike
Open 24 hours. Sunrise and sunset deliver the most dramatic light and cooler temps; midday can be harsh and crowded. After rain or freeze–thaw, bentonite turns slick and sticky, so traction and caution matter if you wander beyond the main path.
Tips and Safety
There’s little shade and no water—bring a hat and carry water, even for quick stops. The steps mean it’s not fully accessible. Stay well back from unfenced cliff edges, and give wildlife plenty of space. Pets are not allowed on park trails.
Make It a Bigger Hike
If you want mileage, link your visit with the nearby Caprock Coulee loop for a fuller tour of the North Unit’s terrain, or tackle sections of the longer, rugged Achenbach route for more Little Missouri viewpoints.
