Kāʻanapali Beach

Kāʻanapali Beach is a roughly three-mile stretch of white sand beside West Maui’s resort district, with the ocean on one side and hotels, restaurants, and shops along much of the other. Come for an easy beach day and a long shoreline walk; choose a quieter, less developed coast if that resort setting isn’t your thing. Public parking is scarce and often fills early. Pick your access point before you arrive, and remember that surf and currents vary along the shore.

The paved beachwalk follows the sand past resort gardens and oceanfront businesses, so you can enjoy the coast without making it a full day in the water. Whalers Village has food from quick counter-service options to full-service oceanfront restaurants, along with shops. Those are nearby businesses, not one beach concession, and no single dish defines this stop.

The dark lava promontory at the north end is Puʻu Kekaʻa, better known as Black Rock. It’s a separate landmark and the best-known snorkeling spot on this stretch; water deepens quickly around the point and currents can be strong. Lifeguards are stationed at Hanakaʻōʻō/Canoe Beach and D.T. Fleming, not along the whole resort beach. In Hawaiian tradition, Puʻu Kekaʻa is ka leina a ka ʻuhane, a place where a soul leaps into eternity, and local stories connect the rock with Chief Kahekili’s cliff-diving tradition. Kāʻanapali’s shoreline has a long Hawaiian and plantation-era story. Kekaʻa was a fishing village near the site of today’s Royal Lāhainā, and the sandy beach later held the Koko O Nā Moku horse-racing track. Hawaiian royalty, plantation owners, and workers watched races there; the last official race was held on July 4, 1918.
