Old Lāhainā Lūʻau

Old Lāhainā Lūʻau is an oceanfront, ticketed dinner and hula performance near Mala Wharf in Lahaina. It’s a good fit if you want a Hawaiian cultural show alongside a meal, but it’s a pricey, roughly three-hour commitment rather than a quick dinner. Hula, chant and live music carry a story from early settlement and ancient traditions through the monarchy and later immigration. Reserve your seating style in advance: regular tables and chairs are available, while first-row mat seating means sitting cross-legged on cushions without back support.

The outdoor event runs around sunset, and arriving 15 to 30 minutes early gives you time to see the pre-show activities. Guests are welcomed with a flower lei; cultural demonstrations, local craft sellers and the imu preparation are part of the grounds before dinner. On-site parking is free but limited, with overflow across Front Street at Lahaina Cannery Mall. The early arrival is useful for parking as well as the pre-show.

Expect a multi-course Hawaiian meal with dishes such as kālua pork, laulau, poi, ahi poke, taro, chicken and fresh-catch fish; offerings can change with the season. Dietary flexibility is limited. Vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free requests need 24 hours’ notice and aren’t guaranteed; allergy requests and substitutions aren’t accommodated. The production keeps its focus on Hawaiian stories, hula and music, so there’s no fire-knife dance, a Samoan tradition.

The business began in 1986, when three partners took over after the first operator of the original luau stopped running it. They developed it as a more culturally focused alternative to hotel luau shows. In May 1998 it moved from 505 Front Street to its current site near historic Mala Wharf, an area once known as Moaliʻi.

The show takes place outdoors beside the water, with the coast and Mala Wharf in view. From November into early March, humpback whales sometimes breach or slap their tails offshore; they’re distant and never guaranteed. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Let staff know when booking whether a guest will remain in their wheelchair or transfer to a venue chair, and mention scooters or other seating needs.
